What’s the Difference Between A UTV And An ATV?

If you’re new to off-road vehicles you might be confused about all of the different options available. ATVs and UTVs typically are the first choices, but what are they and what’s the difference between the two?

ATV’s

ATV or All-Terrain Vehicle is the classic off-road ride that most people think about. Also known as “quads”, ATV’s are designed like motorcycles with the main difference being four wheels instead of two. They have one seat that straddles the engine and the chassis, often seating only one but can be modified to accompany two. They come in many sizes which should match the size of the rider, a child should ride one built for their size not one for an adult. The steering is through a handlebar and the controls are near the hands. Unlike a motorcycle, the accelerator is thumb controlled and not a twist throttle. This is a safety feature to prevent what is known as “whiskey throttle” or accidental acceleration due to rough terrain. Break pedals can be installed but most are designed with a hand brake. Smaller in size ATV’s are very agile and have a tight turning radius. Safety is limited with ATV’s and riders should buy proper clothing and especially a helmet. As far as the cost, used ATV’s come in a wide range but new they came from anywhere between $500 to a few thousand. Designed for quick transportation they are often used for outdoors fun.

UTV’s

UTV or Utility Terrain Vehicles are the workhorses of the outdoors world. Although ATVs are ideal for moving over rough land UTV’s are designed to move equipment or materials over land that trucks could not travel. Larger and more powerful, UTV’s also come with a bed for any type of cargo. Acting more like a car, UTV’s come with two or four seats, allowing riders to sit side by side. They have a steering wheel and foot pedals for braking and accelerating. They top out anywhere from 25-50mph but what they have in speed they lack in turning radius. UTV’s also come with seatbelts, often a windshield and a roll bar, more expensive versions come with a full cabin. However, they do not come cheap as they range from $5,000 up words of $24,000.

Which one should I buy?

ATV’s are the definition of fun. Quick and nimble they are perfect for families with a few acres of land. Along with the lower price point, it is a practical choice for those working with a budget. An ATV would also be optimal for hunting or fishing, perfect for traveling tight trails or even powering through the brush. While either one is a great investment, there is an obvious choice depending upon your functionality needs. UTV’s reside more in the world of work. Designed from the ground up to go where no truck can, these are perfect for the man working with his hands in the dirt and sun over his head. With that said they can easily be used for recreation. A UTV is ideal for a camping trip with friends or family. And it is excellent for those who enjoy a tamer ride then what an ATV would provide.
